During the last couple of weeks I’ve told you about the benefits of blogging, and how to write blog posts that people love. This week I want to show you how to use your blog for PR.

If you’d like practical guidance on this, check out my online masterclass How To Use Blogging & Social Media For PR Success.

Here’s my practical guide to creating a blog that will get you publicity for your business…

Blogging for PR - woman with computer

Pick a blog platform

First things first, if you don’t already have a blog, you need to pick out a blogging platform. The most popular and arguably the most user-friendly is WordPress. It’s easy to set up yourself, or if you’re looking for a really polished look, get an expert to set it up for you. You can customise it so that it looks how you want it and fits in with your brand, and there are plenty of plugins so that you can have all the functionality that you need. Sorted.

Plan you posts

Plan out your blog posts a month or so in advance so that you’re never caught short. Think about the topics you want to cover, and the format you want to use (editorial, graphics, video, etc). But remember, just because you’ve planned your blogs out, doesn’t mean to have to stick your schedule rigidly. Feeling ranty after reading something in the news? Why not write an ad-hoc blog post in response to it? Read a fantabulous post by a well known blogger in your industry? Pen a response and then blog it, with a link to the original post of course.

Create awesome content
Blogs should’t be boring! There are tonnes of things you can include in your blog posts – ‘how to’ and ‘top tips’ guides, guest blog posts, infographics, Q&As, opinion pieces, customer/supplier spotlights, podcasts, the list goes on. Remember to create posts with your ideal clients in mind and cover the topics that they’re likely to be interested in.
Consider video
Video is a powerful marketing tool and is the perfect way to complement your blogging efforts. Use it to film a guide to using your products or services or create a video testimonial from a satisfied customer.  And no, you don’t need to be a techy-geek to do it. Use the built-in webcam on your laptop, your iPhone, or a simple camera on a tripod to film your video. Then use software like iMovie on the Mac or Window’s Movie Maker for the PC to edit your film. Simples.
Remember your SEO
Help your blog posts to be found more easily by using Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Start by researching your keywords – you can use something like the Google Adwords keyword tool to do this. Then make sure you pick one keyword per post and mention it in the title of the post and in the copy. I love free SEO plugin Yoast which helps you to optimise your pages and is super-easy to use.
Make your posts easy to share
You want your followers to share the love, so make it as easy possible for people to share your posts on their favourite social media platforms. Include social sharing buttons at the bottom of each blog post so that people can share your words of wisdom on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, or wherever else their networks are hanging out.Don’t neglect your blog
Decide how often you’d like to blog and try to stick to it. Once a week is a good starting point, and remember, if you are struggling to come up with something new each week you can write a shorter post (a minimum of 300 words is good), include a guest post or do a round-up of posts on a particular subject.Ta-dah! You’re all set for blogging for publicity. Why not leave me a comment below with a link to your blog and I’ll check it out…
