Or perhaps “What should you include in a press release?”
Or even “How do you make sure the journalist actually reads your press release?!”
These are all relevant questions. But fear not, writing a press release really doesn’t need to be as difficult as you think it may be…
Top tips for writing a press release
First things first – what is a press release? Well, a press release (also known as a news release, a media release or a press statement) is a written document sent out to journalists or editors at newspapers and magazines or TV and radio stations.
Its purpose is to let your target media know about your products, services, events or campaigns. So you need to make sure your release includes all the basic information that a journalist may need in order to write a news story relating to you and your business.
You may use your release to announce a forthcoming event, any noteworthy achievements within your business, an award, new products and services, etc.
The journalist will then use this as the basis of a news story, or they may choose to develop it into a larger feature.
As well as contacting the editors and journalists directly, there are now a number of online distribution services that are also available, such as paid-for news release distribution sites or news wire services, although these can be costly.
If you’re thinking about writing a press release but putting it off because you don’t know where to start then worry no longer. I’ve put together a round-up of blog posts that I’ve written on how to write press releases, which I hope will help you. Take a look and let me know what you think…
